The film Bhakshak on Netflix is a hard-hitting film with no holds barred, and yet it handles its subject with great sensitivity. It shocks you and makes you angry, sad, and helpless, all at the same moment. It attempts to awaken the collective conscience of society, a society that seems to have become deaf, blind, and dumb. Bhakshak is one of those rare films on OTT that shows a mirror to society in no uncertain terms.

Bhakshak – A Hard-Hitting Social Comment

Bhakshak On Netflix - A Comprehensive Review

Bhakshak on Netflix addresses the sensitive topic of the exploitation of young, helpless, and orphaned girls by people drunk with power, who are a law unto themselves. However, the film at another level, also deals with the issues of gender discrimination that women from all strata of society face, even in their own homes, and in their choices.

Review of Bhakshak On Netflix

This is a review of Bhakshak on Netflix, in which we shall look at the plot of the film, its cast and its performance, and also provide our thoughts on the film and the subject.

Bhakshak On Netflix – The Plot

The plot of the film is based on true incidents that happened at a shelter home in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. Vaishali Singh is a Television journalist, struggling to balance the demands of her family and its societal pressures with keeping her career afloat. Before you get ideas, she is not working for one of those powerful media houses, on the contrary, she teams up with Bhaskar Sinha, a sardonic gentleman who is her cameraman, to run a channel, in a house with walls from which the plaster is peeling.

Life takes a sharp turn when an informer tips her off about the happenings in a Girls’ Shelter Home, where orphaned girls stay. It is a shelter home where the girls are regularly abused by the local politicians and bureaucrats, with complete impunity. Despite a social audit report, the authorities have turned a blind eye.

This is the spark that ignites the saga of Vaishali Singh, who takes on the ruthless powers that look almost invincible, to expose the ugly faces of the perpetrators of a horrendous crime. She puts everything on the block, including her life, to help free the girls from the clutches of a ruthless politician, Bansi Sahu. The fact that people in authority are in cahoots with him and even the local police is powerless, makes her job well nigh impossible.

Bhakshak On Netflix – The Cast

Bhakshak Cast

The power of the plot is taken up a notch or two with superb performances by the entire cast. Bhumi Pednekar leads the way with a dynamic performance, while Sanjay Mishra, as usual, is a masterclass of acting, assaying his role with effortless finesse. Aditya Srivastav of CID fame, brings to chilling life, the character of the vile and hypocritical politician, Bansi Sahu. The supporting cast too has chipped in with strong performances.

Bhakshank is directed by Pulkit, who has also written the script along with Jyotsana Nath. The film is produced by Red Chillies Entertainment.

  • Bhumi Pednekar as Vaishali Singh
  • Sanjay Mishra as Bhaskar Sinha
  • Aditya Srivastav as Bansi Sahu
  • Chittaranjan Tripathy as Mithilesh Sinha
  • Durgesh Kumar as Guptaji
  • Sai Tamhankar as SSP Jasmeet Kaur
  • Tanisha Mehta as Sudha Kumari

Bhakshak On Netflix – Our Thoughts

Bhakshak transcends the limits of the cinematic medium and seems to directly talk to us, the audience. It attempts to awaken the conscience of society. The film goes beyond the issue of exploitation and abuse of women and looks at how society has been continuously exploiting the vulnerable, and how these incidents, horrendous as they are, seem to have been normalized by society. Bhakshak on Netflix is a must-watch for the issues that it raises, and more so, the manner in which it does so.
