What is a Channapatna Toy? Origin And History Of Channapatna Toys

Channapatna Gombe

Channapatna toys, also known as Channapatna lacquerware, are traditional wooden toys that originate from the town of Channapatna in the state of Karnataka, India. These toys are characterized by their vibrant colours, smooth texture, and intricate designs. What sets them apart is the technique of lacquering, a method that involves coating the wood with natural dyes and lacquer to create a glossy finish that enhances both the appearance and durability of the toys.

Channapatna’s history is intricately woven with the origins of these enchanting wooden toys. The history of Channapatna toys dates back to over 200 years. It is believed that during the time of Tipu Sultan, some visitors from Persia to his court brought wooden toys as gifts. Tipu Sultan was so enamoured with these toys, that he had Persian craftsmen train some of his subjects. Thus, was born, the craft of Channapatna toys.

The people in villages around Channapatna began crafting these toys from locally available ivory wood, also known as hale mara. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, these toys hold deep cultural significance, with their creation being a source of livelihood for generations of skilled craftsmen.

Channapatna, a small town situated around 60 kilometres southwest of Bangalore, is the birthplace of these exquisite toys. The town has earned the moniker of “Toy Town of India” due to its long-standing tradition of producing these wooden wonders. The craft has been passed down through generations, with the artisans of Channapatna carrying forward the legacy with pride.

The Channapatna toys are still handmade in some of the villages around Channapatna. We visited one such village, Neelsandra, in Channapatna Taluk of the Ramanagara District of Karnataka. Families in small houses in the modest village are engaged in this ancient craft.

However, Channapatna Wooden Toys have evolved with time, both in terms of innovative designs and the harnessing of technology for some of the manual processes. We witnessed the evolved form of the Channapatna wooden toys making process at one of the units located in the Channapatna Crafts Park, India’s first Crafts Park. The Park is a Government initiative to nurture the craft of Channapatna Wooden Toys and to harness the skill of over 3,000 local artisans who are part of the Channapatna cluster and are engaged in creating dreams from wood in the form of the famed Channapatna Wooden Toys.

Wood Preparation

The raw wood is procured and cut into various shapes and sizes, serving as the base for different toy forms.

Turning

Skilled artisans use a lathe to shape the wooden pieces into the desired forms, such as animals, dolls, and spinning tops.

Lacquering

This is the defining step that gives Channapatna toys their distinctive appearance. Natural vegetable dyes are mixed with lacquer to create vibrant colours. The wooden surfaces are then coated with these coloured lacquers, resulting in a smooth, shiny finish.

Designing

Artisans meticulously hand-paint intricate designs on the lacquered surface. These designs can range from traditional motifs to contemporary patterns, showcasing the artistic versatility of Channapatna toys.

Polishing

The toys are polished to a glossy sheen using a combination of natural materials, typically a smooth stone or even coconut oil.
