Laxmii Movie Review – Why Laxmii Turns Out To Be A Dud

Movies hit the screens after a lot of hard work on all fronts. It is the fruit of the labour of the entire team from the actors to the producers to the director and countless nameless persons. So it is always sad when the final product falls short of expectations. In the case of the film Laxmii now streaming on Disney+Hotstar, it falls abysmally short!

The OTT platform has seen a spate of releases in recent times and includes better options like Scam 1992 and others. So if you are thinking of watching the Laxmii movie which was originally titled Laxmii Bomb this Diwali, spare some time to read our review, we assure you it will save you 2 hours and 21 minutes of horror and torture.

Laxmii Disney+Hotstar, was a much-hyped and much-awaited Akshay Kumar starrer. The promos had generated a lot of interest and much was expected. However, the movie turned out to be a damp squib, a bomb that failed to explode on the screens. A meaningless exercise in film making and a total waste of resources and talent.

Laxmii – The Plot

We were looking for one when the movie came to an end. But what you do see on the screen is the story of a man called Asif and his wife Rashmi, played by Akshay Kumar and Kiara Advani, respectively. They are struggling to get their inter-religion marriage accepted by Rashmi’s family, specifically her father.

Into this story enters the ominous presence of a ghost which initially makes its presence felt by eerie noises that do not scare you one bit. It then directly, ‘possesses’, Asif. The mannerisms of Asif when possessed by the said spirit reveal that the spirit is that of a transgender.

Cut to the backstory, we learn that Laxmii was a transgender who had been murdered by the villains for a plot of land along with her foster father and foster brother. She has risen from the dead to wreak vengeance.

The story meanders to its miserable end through a series of cliches, comedy sequences that instead of making you laugh, make you grimace. Scenes meant to scare the wits out of you, leave you scoffing. You heave a sigh of relief when the movie draws to a close.

Why Laxmii Movie Is A Dud

  • The movie does not have a tight storyline and just meanders through, it is more like a mash-up of sequences rather than a seamlessly edited movie
  • It is unclear what the movie wants to convey, is it a horror movie which it purports to be, is it a comedy which it attempts to in parts but fails miserably, or is it a movie with a social message
  • If the movie wants to draw attention to gender equality with respect to transgenders and treating them with respect, why does it employ old and derogatory cliches like the number, “6”
  • The movie touted as a supernatural thriller fails to project convincing sequences and the characters end up as caricatures
  • The performances too lack credibility, in fact, some of them look amateurish and sheer hamming by any standards
  • Akshay Kumar who always delivers powerhouse performances disappoints, he looks awkward and forces when playing the role of a transgender, the only saving grace is the performance of Sharad Kelkar as Laxmii
  • All in all the movie seems to be like pieces of a jigsaw hurriedly and haphazardly assembled together into a movie

The movie is directed by Raghava Lawrence and is written by Farhad Samji.

  • Akshay Kumar as Asif
  • Kiara Advani as Rashmi

Final Thoughts On Laxmii

The film is an utter waste of energy and resources by the makers of the film and a sheer waste of time for those who watch it. It is better left alone, like a Diwali bomb that failed to explode.

  1. I had never before heard of the movie Laxmii, but it sounds like a great one to watch! I’ll have to look into streaming it here in Canada.

  2. Kuntala Bhattacharya

Oops seems they could not do justice to the hype on the movie. I was thinking of watching it. Sad it did not hit the stands.
