Review Of Qala – Netflix Original Film
The film Qala is worth a watch for a couple of reasons. For one it has a surreal and almost dream-like quality and has the feel of a vintage painting. Secondly, the music is really soulful. Thirdly it marks the debut of Babil Khan who reminds you of the late Irfan Khan.
Review of Qala – The Plot of Qala Movie
The plot of Qala is set in Kolkata in the 1940s. It is the story of the relationship between a mother and daughter as well as the story of a woman’s ambition and angst. The protagonist is Qala who wants to be a singer. She is always desperate to win her mother’s approval but never succeeds. Add to this the fact that her twin died during childbirth and she thinks she is to blame.
In this scenario enters Jagan, played by Babil Khan whom Qala’s mother Urmila thinks has a divine voice. Urmila adopts Jagan, and becomes his mentor, intending to take his music to great heights. Qala is smitten with jealousy for this new-found sibling. But much against her mother’s wishes she forges ahead to make her name in the music industry, using every trick that she can think of. She becomes a successful singer, estranged from her mother. But her guilt and deep-rooted insecurities haunt her and drive her towards a destiny that she has herself scripted.
The film moves with a leisurely pace, lingering lovingly over every frame, like an artist admiring his own work. However, the visuals together with the music successfully evoke a dreamy ambience that takes you back to a bygone era. The film is a painting, one which also sings lilting melodies. Qala also has a message about mental wellness.
Review of Qala – Cast And Performances
Quala’s plot is hemmed in by some nice performances by the entire cast. Swastika Mukherjee as Urmila, the mother of the protagonist excels. Triptii Dimri assaying the title role of Qala, shows flashes of brilliance, while the expressive eyes of Babil Khan bring back haunting memories of Irfan Khan. Amit Sial delivers a literally smooth performance. But, undoubtedly the stars of the movie that keeps you rooted in your seat are its visuals and soothing music.
Qala movie is written and directed by Anvita Dutt. The film is produced by Karnesh Ssharma and Anushka Sharma who also makes a fleeting appearance.
- Triptii Dimri as Qala
- Swastika Mukherjee as Qala’s mother Urmila
- Babil Khan as Jagan
