Squid Game is inspired by a Korean game of the same name played by kids. In the original game, kids divide themselves into two groups. One group defends a territory that is marked by a diagram that resembles a squid, while the other team tries to dislodge the team defending from the area. There is a marked area which is the home base, and both teams have to establish their dominance on it. The team that is attacking, can only hop on one leg. The game involves a lot of pushing, jostling, and scrambling to get to the home base.

The Squid Game web series takes this innocuous kid game to a totally different level, a dangerous one that involves high stakes and desperate men and women.

The protagonist named Seong Gi-hun is at a dead end. He is broke and heavily in debt. His debtors are close on his heels, demanding their pound of flesh. He has an old mother, and a little daughter living with his wife who has left him for another man. In a nutshell, Seong Gi-hun has his back to the wall. In this desperate situation, he gets an invitation to be part of a game, that would change his life forever. He accepts, but the game is something he had never thought of in his wildest imagination.

Seong Gi-hun finds himself with hundreds of other men and women who are in similar situations, and as desperate as he is. The players are pitted against each other in successive rounds and only those who qualify in each round move on to the next. Those who fail to qualify, are, “eliminated,” from the game, and forfeit their lives!

The situation is such that men who were desperate in the outside world and in dire financial straits, now find themselves struggling, fighting, and killing to keep themselves alive and in the game. You cannot trust anyone as your life is at stake, however, the situation forges relationships and bonds, between strangers. Are the bonds real? Will the relationships help Seong Gi-hun to win the game and stay alive? Is he able to get the promised booty of millions of dollars?

You would need to watch the Squid Game on Netflix, to find answers to these and other similar questions.

A word of caution here, some scenes depict raw violence, blood, and gore, take your call, there are lives at stake!
