Jawaharlal Nehru was one of the main leaders of India’s freedom struggle against British rule. He along with leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and others spearheaded India’s independence movement, which finally forced the British out of the country. India became independent on the 15th of August, 1947, and Jawaharlal Nehru independent India’s first Prime Minister, a post which he held for 16 years.

His historic speech when India got its independence is remembered even today. Nehru was also a voracious reader and prolific writer. The most famous of his books are, “Letters From A Father to His Daughter,” and, “The Discovery Of India.”  Jawaharlal Nehru was born on the 14th of November, 1889 in Allahabad to Motilal Nehru, and Swarup Rani. He breathed his last on the 27th of May, 1964, in New Delhi. The nation remembers Jawaharlal Nehru also called Chacha Nehru, by celebrating his birth anniversary as Children’s Day.

Jawaharlal Nehru is one of the most well-known leaders who fought against the British for India’s independence. He was born on the 14th of November, 1889 in Allahabad. His father was Motilal Nehru who was a wealthy barrister. He was also the President of the Indian National Congress twice. Jawaharlal Nehru’s mother was Swarup Rani.

Jawaharlal Nehru was the eldest of three siblings. He had two younger sisters, the elder one was Vijayalakshmi, and the younger one was Krishna. His early schooling was done at home with the help of private tutors and Governesses. Jawaharlal Nehru was interested in science, and theosophy from early childhood. Annie Besant who was a family friend had a great influence on him, and it was she who introduced him to the Theosophical Society, at the age of 13. Jawaharlal Nehru studied Buddhist works and the Hindu scriptures, which formed the foundation for his future thoughts and actions.

Jawaharlal Nehru did his later schooling in Harrow, a public school in London, and went on to do his graduation in Natural Sciences from Trinity College in Cambridge. After this, he went on to study law in London and was called to the Bar in 1912. Nehru returned to Allahabad and became an advocate in the Allahabad High Court. However, his heart was not in his profession.

Jawaharlal Nehru had developed a keen interest in Indian politics and soon jumped into the nationalist movement that was creating a stir in the country. He married Kamala Kaul in the year 1916, and their only daughter Indira was born in 1917.

Jawaharlal Nehru became the President of the Indian National Congress during the Lahore session in 1929 and passed a resolution, calling for complete independence. He was supported by Mahatma Gandhi, who considered Nehru as his political heir.

Jawaharlal Nehru was sworn in as the first Prime Minister of India after independence, and on the 15th of August, 1947, he delivered his historic speech, “Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom…,”

Jawaharlal Nehru was not only a great orator but also an eminent writer. He authored many books, and wrote his famous book, “The Discovery of India,” during his incarceration at the Ahmednagar Fort between 1942 to 1945. Jawaharlal Nehru was a very popular leader with the masses and this is proved by the fact that he was Prime Minister of India for 3 successive terms, and to date is the longest serving Prime Minister in Indian history, having held the office for 16 years. Jawaharlal Nehru loved and was loved by children, and India celebrates his birth anniversary as Children’s Day, on the 14th of November, every year.

India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Chacha Nehru to millions, breathed his last on the 27th of May, 1977, after having etched his name in the annals of the country’s history.
