He was the first Deputy Prime Minister and the first Home Minister of independent India. He is best known for uniting small kingdoms of India under one nation to form the Republic of India.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was one of the most respected and important leaders of India’s freedom movement. He along with Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru formed a formidable trinity which proved to be a thorn in the side of the British empire and ultimately led to India becoming independent.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born on 31st October 1875, in the small town of Nadiad, in what was then the British Presidency, and is now part of the state of Gujarat. His father was Jhaverbhai Patel who is said to have taken part in the 1857 first war of independence of India under Rani Lakshmibai. After that, he is believed to have settled down to till his ancestral property in Kheda, Gujarat. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s mother was Ladba. He was one of six siblings.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel studied in schools in Nadiad, Petlad, and Borsad. He completed his matriculation when he was 22 years old. Right from his childhood, he is believed to have possessed strong willpower and a towering personality. A famous childhood incident which highlights Sardar Patel’s strong willpower, is his treating a boil on his body with a hot iron rod without so much as a grimace, while the person who was supposed to treat it shied away from it.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was married at the age of 17 to Jhaverba and had two children, a daughter named Maniben, and a son who was called Dahya.  He had a dream of becoming a Barrister in England, and with this aim, he started a law practice in Godhra and then Borsad. Simultaneously he was saving money to travel to England to realize his dream. When the time came to go to England, Sardar Patel realized that his elder brother Vitthalbhai Patel, also nursed the same ambition, and so in a magnanimous gesture he allowed his elder brother to go to England in his place.

Five years later, in 1935, Sardar Patel went to England to fulfil his dream of being a Barrister. He topped his exams and completed his barristers within 30 months as he got two exemptions. In the normal course, this would have taken 3 years. After becoming a barrister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel returned to India and set up his practice in Ahmedabad. In a short span of time, he established a thriving practice and was a much sought-after criminal lawyer in Ahmedabad.

A turning point in Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s life came after he met Mahatma Gandhi, on whose advice he became the leader of the Bardoli Satyagraha, which was a successful movement. Pleased with his dynamic leadership, Mahatma Gandhi conferred upon him the title of, ‘Sardar.” After this, there was no looking back and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel continued to play a key role in the independence movement. He was also the President of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and undertook many path-breaking public works in the city.

The greatest contribution of Sardar Vallabhai Patel was the integration of the many princely states into the Republic of India, after independence. He was also instrumental in establishing the All India Service consisting of the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, and the Indian Forest Service. Sardar Patel was India’s first Deputy Prime Minister, and also the first Home Minister.

The man who came to be known as the “Iron Man of India,” breathed his last on the 15th of December, 1950, at the age of 75.
