Bihar’s Champaran and Amritsar’s Jallianwalah Bagh, Ahmedbads Gandhi Ashram, and Port Blair’s Cellular Jail, are all places to visit this Independence Day and pay tribute to the martyrs of India. 1. Red Fort in Delhi

The Red Fort in many ways has been a witness to India’s freedom struggle. It continues to silently observe India’s growth and development. India’s Prime Minister delivers the Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort and has been doing so ever since India’s independence.

The Red Fort is steeped in history. It was the place where the soldiers of INA, the Army that had been forged by Subhash Chandra Bose were tried. Today the Red Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

2. Jallianwalah Bagh, Amritsar

The bullet marks that are still visible, bring alive the horror of the Jallianwalah Bagh massacre. The place is sure to bring tears to your eyes, as you relive the horrendous incidents of 13, April 1919. Machine guns rained bullets on a crowd of unsuspecting and peaceful protesters. General Dyer was the man who gave the orders to open fire and unleash hell on innocent men, women, and children. After the firing stopped, 379 people were dead, and more than 1,000 were injured.

An eternal flame burns as a silent requiem for the dead. Jallianwalah Bagh is one of the most moving places to visit this Independence Day.

3. Gandhi Ashram, Ahmedabad

The Gandhi Ashram or Sabarmati Ashram was in many ways the nerve centre of the Indian freedom movement. The father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, lived here and orchestrated many of the famous movements that ultimately led to India’s independence. Located on the banks of the River Sabarmati, the Gandhi Ashram is an oasis of serenity in the midst of the bustling city of Ahmedabad. The famous Dandi march originated from Gandhi Ashram. Mahatma Gandhi received many distinguished Indian and foreign leaders at the Ashram.

4. Raj Ghat, Delhi

A visit to Delhi would be incomplete without a visit to Raj Ghat. This is the place where the mortal remains of the Father of the Nation were cremated. A memorial to Mahatma Gandhi stands here as a reminder of the life of a man, who earned the title of Mahatma. The Raj Ghat is a place of pilgrimage, and one of the most important places to visit this Independence Day.

5. August Kranti Maidan, Mumbai

The Quit India Movement in the year 1942 increased the pressure on the British Raj. This ultimately culminated in India becoming independent on the 14th of August, 1947. The Gowalia Tank Maidan, now known as the August Kranti Maidan, in Mumbai, was the place where Mahatma Gandhi made a call to, “Do or Die,” and launched the Quit India movement. The historic ground is also the place where the tricolor was first hoisted, by Aruna Asaf Ali.
