The designation and celebration of World Heritage Day was approved by the General Assembly of UNESCO in the year 1983. World Heritage Day which is also known as, “International Day for Monuments and Sites”, is observed every year on the 18th of April. The day is celebrated throughout the world. Visits to heritage sites, seminars, and a host of other activities are organized on this day. Every year UNESCO chooses a different theme for World Heritage Day. The theme for World Heritage Day 2021 is, “Complex Past: Diverse Futures.”

The objective of World Heritage Day is to increase awareness across the world for cultural heritage, monuments, and other sites and cultural practices of extrinsic and intrinsic value. Sustainability, conservation, and preservation of the world’s heritage and monuments is another objective on which World Heritage Day hopes to raise awareness.
