Up amongst the lush mountains, in the picturesque settings of the beautiful hill station of Abbot Mount in the state of Uttarakhand, stands a deserted and sinister-looking building. This building which is located in the centre of vast wooded grounds was once a hospital that was buzzing with activity. Today the doors and windows have been sealed close and the entrance gate is locked.

The ghost story associated with the hospital is that many years ago, during the colonial era, Dr Morris was in charge of the hospital. He used to conduct bizarre experiments on his patients, particularly the ones, who were terminally ill. It is said that he used to predict the time and date of death of his patients, and would in fact himself kill them at the predicted time and death. He had a special ward which was named, “Mukti Kothri,” and he used to shift the fatally ill to this ward.

In due course, the hospital was shut down and fell derelict. Dr Morris too died. But locals started seeing nocturnal sightings of ghosts, and the ghost story of the place being haunted by the spirit of Dr Morris, and his victims, spread like wildfire.

2. Kuldhara In Rajasthan – India’s Most Haunted Places

Kuldhara is an abandoned village, in the Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan. The village is believed to be haunted. According to local myths, the village which was inhabited by Paliwal Brahmins was abandoned overnight. Though the village may have been abandoned because of a water crisis, the myth goes that a minister named Salim Singh had lusted after a girl in the village, and sent his guards to abduct her.

The villagers requested the guards to come the next day, and then in order to protect the girl, the villagers evacuated the village overnight.

While abandoning the village, the brahmins put a curse on it, that it would never be inhabited and would lie in ruins. Later there were many attempts to inhabit the village, however, eerie paranormal activities there ensured that no one was ever able to live there.

Mussoorie, the beautiful hill station near Dehradun in Uttarakhand, is well known for its natural beauty and panoramic views. However, there exists a place here which is sure to give you a hair-raising experience. This place is the abandoned mined of Lambi Dehar. The mines were limestone mines which were closed by the government in 1990, because of many fatalities owing to low safety standards. The mine then fell derelict and has lain abandoned in a lonely area where no one ventures.

It is said that there have been many accidents including a helicopter crash in the vicinity of the Lambi Dehar Mines. Locals tell ghost stories related to the spotting of an old witch. Whatever the truth the site of the abandoned mines makes for a definite spooky experience.

The ruins of the Bhangarh Fort which is a 16th-century fort in Rajasthan and one of India’s most haunted places. Visitors to the majestic four set in pristine environs have experienced anxiety as if some invisible presence was watching or following them. Doesn’t that sound eerie? A visit to the Bhangarh Fort is sure to spook you out of your wits. In fact, visiting Bhangarh fort after sunset is not allowed and you are not allowed to stay in the fort after dark.

The Bhangarh Fort is an impressive and elegant structure that lies in the dark shadow of ghost stories. The Bhangarh Fort which dates back to the 17th century is believed to be under the curse of a sage named Guru Balu Nath. The legend goes that this sage used to meditate in the vicinity even before the fort was constructed. When the king of the region decided to build a fort there, he implored Saint Guru Balu Nath for his acquiescence, Guru Balu Nath agreed with a condition. He stipulated that in no circumstance should the shadow of the fort touch him where he sat in meditation.

The king agreed to the condition and initially it is believed that initially the fort was built in such a way that the height of the fort ensured that no shadow was cast on the meditating saint. However, later expansion and construction resulted in the increase of a portion of the fort. What happened next, was the shadow of the fort fell on Guru Balu Nath and disturbed his meditation. In a fit of fury, the Guru unleashed a curse on the fort.

Even today one can view houses in the vicinity that have no roofs, which are believed to be a result of the curse. Many freaky accidents have occurred in and around Bhangarh Fort which has led credence to the opinion that the fort is one of the most haunted places in India.

5. Tunnel No 103 In Himachal Pradesh – India’s Most Haunted Places

Tunnels by their very nature are scary. One associates tunnels with darkness and fear, childhood memories of travelling in a train that enters a pitch-dark tunnel are sure to send a chill up your spine. And if a tunnel is haunted, the fear transforms into sheer terror.

The famous UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Kalka-Shimla railway is associated with one such scary and haunted tunnel, the Barog Tunnel of Tunnel No 103. The ghost story associated with the Barog tunnel is that a British engineer named Colonel Barog was tasked with the construction of a tunnel in the late 19th century.

The tunnel was being dug from both ends by the workers, however, due to some miscalculations by Colonel Barog, the tunnel could not be completed. Colonel Barog faced the ire of the authorities and was fired from his job. A depressed Colonel Barog shot himself and died. A new tunnel was constructed and Colonel Barog was buried near the tunnel that had become the reason for his death.

It is said that the ghost of Colonel Barog haunts the tunnel. There are also stories of a woman dressed in white walking in the dark tunnel. Locals say that the ghost of Colonel Barog is harmless and even chats with people who are new and do not know the story about the tunnel and then disappears into thin air!
