The Plot of Serious Men | Review of Serious Men

review of Serious Men

The plot of Serious Men deals with a very serious topic, a contemporary issue which most if not all parents can identify with. The story is wound around a father’s dream for his son and the extent to which he can go to prove that his son is extraordinary, a genius, different from the run of the mill.

Ayyan Mani is a Dalit who has risen from poverty and is now the PA to an Astronomer Dr. Acharya in a Scientific Institute in Mumbai. Ayyan lives in a Mumbai Chawl with his wife Oja. The couple is soon blessed with a son whom they call Adi. Adi soon grows up and starts going to school. Ayyan wants the best school and education for his son.

As Adi grows up he grabs the attention of his teachers with his brilliance which borders on the genius. His brilliance attracts politicians who want to use him as a Dalit Mascot. Adi achieves celebrity status and schools are after him to get him on their rolls.

Ayyan uses his son like a trophy. But the father and son have a secret between them which is not even shared with Adi’s mother. But the secret is soon out. The pressure of being a genius also starts proving too much for the young shoulders of Adi to bear. Ayyan sees the dream for his son turning into a nightmare.

What happens next? What is the secret between Adi and Ayyan? Is Adi able to cope up to the demands of being a child prodigy?

Our Thoughts About Serious Men | Review of Serious Men

Review of Serious Men

Serious Men is definitely a film that must be seen. Firstly, it scores with its unique storyline. Secondly, the performance of Nawazuddin Siddiqui is something to watch out for. The supporting cast including Aakshath Das as Adi turn in strong performances and keep the attention of viewers riveted till the end. Though there is an undercurrent of the caste system running as a secondary thread in the plot, the focus is on an ambitious father going the extra mile to ensure his son’s future. The political machinations and caste politics that are a backdrop for the plot are sure to resonate with audiences, who are sure to get a feeling of deja vu.

Serious Men is a film that is a must-watch and more so for parents of young kids.
