Ganesha or Ganapathi is the son of Lord Shiva and the Goddess Parvati. His brother is Kartikeya also known as Subrahmanya. Ganesha stays with his brother and parents in their home on a mountain named Kailash. Ganesha as a small boy liked to play with his brother in the forest. They loved each others company, though sometimes they would fight and end up taking their arguments to their father, Lord Shiva and mother Parvati.

One day, as usual, both the brothers were playing in their favourite area in the forest, when their eyes fell upon a strange looking fruit. It was very colourful and attractive. They both ran towards it and reached it at the same time. They were so attracted by the fruit, that they forgot their friendship and fought for its possession.

Both of them wanted the strange-looking fruit for themselves and did not want to share it. They soon approached their father, Lord Shiva who was sitting with their mother in Mount Kailash.

The sound of his sons arguing and fighting with each other reached Shiva’s ears even before they approached him. He smiled to himself as the boys prostrated before him and proceeded to tell him about the strange fruit they had come across.

“I found this first, so it is mine,” said  Kartikeya.

“I picked it up first, so it is mine,” said Ganesha.

“Give me the fruit,” said Shiva, taking the colourful fruit in his hand.

Shiva then proposed a test for both the boys and told them that whoever succeeded in the test would get the fruit.

“What is the test?” chorused both Kartikeya and Ganesha.

“It is very simple, both of you have to go around the world 3 times and whoever finishes first, shall get the fruit,” said Shiva.

“Yes, let’s do it,” shouted Kartikeya, a mischievous smile on his lips. He knew that Ganesha’s vehicle which was a Mouse would be no match for his vehicle, a Peacock!

“Your time starts now!” said Shiva.

Kartikeya did not even wait for him to finish, as he ran towards his peacock, and was off in no time.

Ganesha was left standing before his parents.

“Don’t you want the fruit?” asked Shiva to Ganesha who stood in front of him with folded hands.

“Yes, I do, and I shall get it!” said Ganesha with calm confidence. With that, he started walking around the seated Shiva and Parvati, his hands folded and eyes closed. He completed 3 rounds around his parents and prostrated before them.

“You are my parents, and hence my entire world resides in you.” “I have completed three rounds around my world, and hence I have won the test.”

Both Shiva and Parvati were moved by the love and smartness of Ganesha. Shiva knew that the fruit would grant wisdom and knowledge to the one who would eat it. He acknowledged Ganesha’s smartness and his faith in his parents and announced that Ganesha was the winner. He handed over the fruit to Ganesha. It was a fitting reward for the smartness of Ganesha.
