The man whom the world reveres as Mahatama Gandhi was born as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on the 2nd of October, 1869 in the town of Porbandar in Gujarat state. His father was Karamchand Uttamchand Gandhi who was the Dewan of the then Porbandar State. His mother was Putlibai, a pious and God-fearing lady who had a deep impact on Mahatma Gandhi as a child.
When Mahatma Gandhi was still a small boy his family shifted from Porbandar to Rajkot, and Mahatma Gandhi was enrolled in the Alfred School.
Mahatma Gandhi was married to Kasturba Gandhi when he was 13 and she just 14. Gandhi trained to be a lawyer in London and after a couple of years of unsuccessful practice of law in India moved to South Africa. Gandhiji practiced law in South Africa and fought for civil rights. It was in South Africa that he first launched a non-violent movement of protest.
Gandhiji was given the title of Mahatma while in South Africa itself. He returned to India in 1915 and plunged into the struggle for India’s freedom. He became the president of the Indian National Congress in 1920. He led the freedom movement from the frontlines and harnessed the power of public support through many of his non-cooperation movements and fasts. Some of the notable movements during Gandhiji’s time include the Dandi March in the year 1920 and the Quit India Movement in 1942.
Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on 30 January 1948, barely 6 months after India attained its freedom.
