Money Heist – Riveting Crime Drama

Money Heist is a Spanish thriller in the Crime Drama genre. The original was a Spanish television series called Lacasa Papel. The first season has two parts with a total of 15 episodes while the second season has 16 episodes across two parts. The last part, which is Part 4 of season two released in April 2020. Season 5 of Money Heist is likely to be released in 2021, while a Korean adaptation is also being made.

Money Heist is an award-winning series and has received many awards including the Emmy Award for Best Drama Series. Úrsula Corberó, the Spanish actress who plays the role of Tokyo, Alvaro Morte who plays the Professor, and Alba Flores who plays the role of Nairobi have won Iris Best Actor Awards.

The Plot of Money Heist

The series is in Spanish and can be watched with English subtitles on Netflix. The plot unfolds as narrated by one of the protagonists named Tokyo and consists of real-time updates and flashbacks. A “Professor”, recruits a team, all of whom have some or the other criminal background, and coaches them in preparation for the biggest money heist of all times. Their target, the Royal Mint of Spain or Lacasa Papel-The House of Paper. They plan to make away with a staggering € 2.4 Billion!

Each and every detail is planned by the ‘Professor” with the precision of a military operation. With the approach of D-Day, the plan is executed, and from then on it is an engrossing game of chess between the “Professor”, and the police authorities, as they negotiate for the release of the hostages held captive by the “Professor’s” team who are holed up inside the Royal Mint. The members of the team have adopted names of cities like Tokyo, Helsinki, Berlin, Rio, Nairobi, etc., to conceal their real identities and have also put on identical masks of the face of Salvator Dali.

There are many interesting twists and turns in each episode that keeps the viewers hooked and anticipating the next episode. What differentiates the series Money Heist from other crime dramas is the fact that the emphasis is more on mental prowess and temperament, rather than crude physical violence. The plot runs on different levels, apart from the main plot, at a secondary level, the inter-relationships of different characters is brought out nicely and these are subsidiary stories in themselves.
